Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy, also known as upper endoscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a medical procedure used to examine the upper digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).

During a gastroscopy, a thin, flexible tube with a light and a camera at the end, called an endoscope, is carefully inserted through the mouth and down the throat into the digestive system. This allows the healthcare provider to visually inspect the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum in real-time.

Gastroscopy can help diagnose various gastrointestinal conditions such as ulcers, inflammation, tumors, or bleeding. Additionally, small instruments can be passed through the endoscope to take tissue samples (biopsies) or perform certain therapeutic procedures, like removing polyps or stopping bleeding.

Overall, gastroscopy is a valuable tool in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal disorders.
